Potatoes are relatives of the tomato, chilies and tobacco. More than 200 varieties are indigenous to the cool regions of Central and South America and one species (Solanum Tuberosum) has been brought to Europe by Spanish explorers around 1570 where it quickly spread in the local cuisines.
