The tomato is probably the most famous vegetable that isn't actually a vegetable. Technically, tomatoes are the fruits of the tomato plant, which is a member of the nightshade family (like potatoes). The plant originates in South America and was brought to Europe by the Spanish. Initially, it was not widely accepted because people feared that tomatoes were poisonous (like other nightshade plants). But at some point the tide turned and some tomato advocates even attributed aphrodisiac powers to the fruit.
Nowadays there is a wide range of tomato varieties and an even wider range of tasty tomato recipes.
